The book is a marine adventure set at the beginning of the Revolutionary War.   It has been almost a year since the start of the siege of Boston by the revolutionary forces under General Washington.  The rebels secretly place several cannon captured from Fort Ticonderoga onto Dorchester Heights , overlooking the British fleet in Boston Harbor .  Fearing the loss of the fleet from the patriots' cannon found in a superior position, the British commander, General Howe, pulls the fleet out of Boston , evacuating all of the troops and loyalists from the city.  The British have suffered their first major defeat at the hands of the patriots.

Stung by the "inferior" colonial forces, the British mount a large scale invasion of the colonies in mid-1776.  Almost four hundred ships with troops and supplies set out across the Atlantic .  Preceding this massive force is a single, large, First-Rate, man-o-war, the recently completed H.M.S. Vindicator.  The mission of the newest and largest war ship in the British fleet is, using its superior fire power, to destroy the smaller war ships of the Colonial Navy defending the Northeast coasts.  And to wipe out the harbor fortifications in Boston , New York and Philadelphia in preparation for the troop landings.

Almost a year earlier, a young, colonial merchant marine officer had been sent on a covert mission to England to learn about the Vindicator.  He was employed by the Chatham Dockyard where Vindicator was under construction.  During the course of his work, he overhears the Captain describing the first mission of H.M.S. Vindicator and escapes back to the Colonies to organize a raid to stop the Vindicator from its deadly undertaking.  Using the fishing schooner, Procyon, and the knowledge and skills of some local fishermen of the village of Annisquam in Massachusetts, the patriots employ stealth and cunning to gain access to the H.M.S. Vindicator.  The plans go awry and the raiders are captured by the British.  Will the massive British ship now be able to complete its deadly mission?
