“Procyon Shadows H.M.S. Vindicator” Cover painting by Anthony J. Marolda The Raid on the H.M.S. Vindicator is an historical, maritime adventure set at the beginning of the Revolutionary War. The places in the storyline range from the Caribbean to England, with the culmination of the tale taking place off the coasts of Cape Ann, the Isles of Shoals and Boston. Annisquam Village, on Cape Ann, and its inhabitants play a key role in Part Three. Anthony J. Marolda, the author, said, "My goal was to write an exciting yarn that was historically accurate. I wanted the style to be fast-paced and visual. I did a great deal of research to create the proper settings and historical context of the story. An early draft was reviewed for historical verisimilitude by the professional historians at the Naval Historical Center in Washington, D.C. Their suggestions were incorporated into the final version of the adventure". The book is written in three Parts. The Parts are chronological and the story line in one part leads into the next. The role of the protagonist, Jared Westcott, a young merchant marine officer, is the common thread in each of the Parts. The theme of the tale is the quest by Jared Westcott to clear his name as a competent merchant marine officer by successfully carrying out a mission for the Continental Navy. The major roadblock to Westcott's success is the Captain of H.M.S. Vindicator. He is a driven man trying to regain his family's reputation for heroism in the service of the Royal Navy. Only one of the two men can be successful and in each case the end result will be critical for their side in the Revolutionary War.
